How To

How to replace a broken window

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. This repair will take only 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the affected area

Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
