How do I replace a damaged window?

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. Repairs should take about 30 minutes in this situation. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Second step: Clean the new glass

Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Reattach the window panes into the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. Use a silicone caulk gun to seal the space where the panes meet.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
