Cost of a home energy audit

The home energy audit can help you determine how much money your monthly utility bills will be reduced by identifying inefficient parts of your home. Energy efficiency can be achieved for as little as $500 to $1,000 each year. This will not only save you money but also protect your family's health. Poorly ventilated houses are not only dangerous, but can also lead to mildew and mold growth.

The size of your home affects the cost of a house energy audit. For example, a 1,200-square foot home will cost approximately $250 to $300 while a home that is 5,000 squares will cost $700 to $1,500. In some cases, your utility company may even offer a free energy evaluation if you purchase one of their products. A professional energy audit could save you anywhere from 5% to 30% on your utility bill.

How to Replace a Broken Window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. This repair will take only 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push your pane back into its opening. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will create a good seal between the glass and the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
