Hiring a handyman is an investment in your future

There are many options for estimating the cost of a handyman’s labor. The cost per hour varies depending on the project and the handyman’s level. In high-cost areas, handymen charge more an hour. Additional costs include insurance for handymen, vehicle upkeep and overhead. The materials needed to do the job determine the cost of a handyman’s labor. Many handymen bring basic tools, miscellaneous hardware, and tools for simple tasks like hanging heavy artwork. It is possible to spend more for a higher-priced piece of art that will require professional assistance.

FAQ

Do I have to train a handyman?

No. Handymen already have the skills and knowledge to complete any job. All you need to do is give them the materials to complete the job.

Are you able to work as a handyman without a license?

Most states don't require a license in order to be an independent contractor, as opposed to a salaried employee. However, there are some requirements you must fulfill:

  • Minimum 18 years.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Take a four-week course at vocational school.
  • You must pass a background check at the Department of Licensing.
  • Pay a $20 fee to register annually.

You will also need business licenses and workers' compensation insurance.

Why should I hire a handyman instead of doing it myself?

A handyman can save you time and money. Not only will you save time, but you also avoid the hassle of hiring another person. Hire a handyman to help you with your job.

Where are handymen from?

There are thousands of handymen across the U.S., but almost none of them started out as a contractor. Many started out as tradesmen, learning the skills through apprenticeships. As a result, they often possess great skill sets and a wealth of knowledge, which makes them very valuable assets to any company.

What is the best time to hire a handyman for your project?

There is no "right" time to hire handymen. All you need is to get going as soon and as quickly as possible. You can save money by waiting until after the holidays. But you could also just pick up the phone and call around to different handymen.

Are handymen insured?

Yes! Yes. Most insurance companies will cover liability claims for bodily injury and accidental property damage up to $1,000,000. This means that you will be compensated by your insurance company if anything goes wrong during the project.

What should I choose: hourly or per-project?

It really comes down to personal preference. Some people prefer to pay an hourly rate so that they know how much their handyman costs. Others prefer to be paid for each job completed, since they may need multiple jobs at the same time. Both are fine.

How do I replace a damaged window?

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. This repair will take only 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean your new glass

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push your pane back into its opening. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
