How To

How to replace a broken window

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Second step: Clean your new glass

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Attach the window panes to the frames. Begin by gently pressing down on one end of the outermost panel with the tip a screwdriver. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Let the caulking set overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. You can cause cracking in the caulking if it isn't left enough time.
