How To

How do you replace a broken window?

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. If you don't know how to replace broken glass, you could cause more damage to your home. This article will give you some helpful tips for replacing broken windows.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Second step: Clean the new glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Attach the window panes to the frames. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.

Fourth Step: Repair the affected area

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create a seal between the glass frame and the wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
